Why a short stack pancake costume? Because “short stack” is one of Brad’s nicknames for Owen. Plus who doesn’t love a baby dressed as one of America’s favorite breakfast foods?

I made this costume for less than $10– with coupons, of course. I purchased everything I didn’t already have (fleece, felt, ribbon) from JoAnn Fabric.

Here’s what you’ll need for your costume:

• 1/4 yard ivory fleece
• 1/4 yard light brown fleece
• 1 sheet yellow felt
• 1 sheet dark brown felt
• 1 piece of cardboard
• ribbon
• marker
• hot glue gun + glue
• scissors
• pins
• circular shapes to size

Double up your fleece and trace your circular object.

The sizing of your circular objects depends on the size of your child. Since Owen is a newborn, I used a large Pyrex lid for the ivory fleece

I used a slightly smaller storage container for the light brown fleece.

Again, see how my fabric is doubled up?

You should trace two of each.

Pin them together and cut them out. The top circles act as your guides. Use the bottom circles for the costume because they won’t have marker marks on them.

To give the top pancake more structure, I cut out a piece of cardboard that was slightly smaller than the light brown fleece to fit in between the light brown fleece and ivory fleece.

I used hot glue to secure the two pieces of fleece together. No need to go bananas here or the glue might seep through.

pancake costume 7

For the bottom pancake I didn’t need structure since Owen would be laying on it so I didn’t use the cardboard.

I glued the two pieces together.

To design the syrup and butter, I traced the brown fleece container onto a piece of poster board. Then I sketched the syrup and butter so the size would be correct.

Then, I cut out the syrup, traced it onto the dark brown felt, and cut it out.

Next, I cut out the butter from the middle of the syrup template and traced it onto the yellow felt and cut it out.

Then, I glued the syrup onto the light brown fleece, followed by the butter.

I used Owen to size the space needed between the top pancake and bottom pancake.

I started by cutting two strips of ribbon. Then, I laid the bottom pancake down, put Owen on top, and set the top pancake on top of him. I attached the ribbon with pins to mark where I needed to hot glue the ribbon to the pancakes.

Finally, I hot glued the ribbons into place. But before that, to keep the ribbon from fraying, I used this handy trick.

Breakfast is served!

I cranked the white noise for this photo shoot, which is why Owen looks like he’s about the pass out while laying in a giant platter. White noise is his baby crack.
