Kitchen Makeover Plans

A couple weeks ago I announced that we’re having our kitchen cabinets refaced by Home Depot (there’s also a $1,000 Home Depot gift card up for grabs). Today I’m sharing the plans for our builder-grade honey oak cabinets.

To review, refacing is perfect for those who like the layout of their current kitchen. The existing cabinet doors, drawers, and drawer fronts are removed. Wood or laminate veneer is adhered to the existing cabinets and frames. Then the new doors, drawers, drawer fronts, and hardware is installed. The whole process typically takes between 3-5 days.

We love the layout and ample amount of storage space our kitchen offers. However, we don’t love the color of the cabinets. Plus, there’s just too much wood going on in our kitchen with the cabinets and flooring. So refacing was the perfect option for us. We get to keep the layout of our kitchen, but improve the look and function of it.

We decided to go with Martha Stewart Annandale thermofoil cabinet doors in the color Picket Fence, which is basically white. Brad wanted to change the cabinets to white since the day we bought our home. I quickly jumped on the white cabinetry train with him. Since our kitchen only has one window the white cabinets will bounce more light off of them than our current cabinets, maximizing the small amount of light we get through the window.

I couldn’t find a kitchen photo with our exact choice, but I found a bathroom. The only difference is our drawer fronts will be flat and with different hardware. Brad and I love the simple look of the cabinet doors. We’re also going to go with full overlay doors (very little cabinet frame showing around each door) as shown below. We like the seamless look compared to the traditional look of our current 1/2 inch overlay doors.

We’re going to have toppers and crown moulding installed on top of the existing cabinets to fill in the 12 inches of awkward space I loathe. The new cabinet doors will be taller so the top of the cabinets will become an additional shelf. By adding the toppers and taller doors we’re not losing storage space. If anything, we’re gaining storage space because we’ll be able to store more things and hide them behind the cabinet doors.

My wish of having a bookshelf added to the island is also coming true. The bookshelf will be added to the side of the island shown below, which faces the main doorway to the kitchen. I’m already planning which cookbooks and vintage kitchenware to display on the bookshelf.

  1. Sounds like a great plan for your kitchen! I can’t wait to see how it turns out. My kitchen only has one window as well and I am quickly jumping on the white cabinet wagon as well!

  2. I love the idea! I definitely want to make our cabinets white too. I think we need a little more work done to the kitchen first though! Can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

  3. I think I have those same cabinets and floors! (I have a kitchen tour post coming up later in the week if you want to check it out.) I agree it’s just too much light wood going on! Your choice of white will be awesome. I’ve never heard of refacing and can’t wait to see the big reveal! Maybe it would work in our home too?

  5. I love your choices! My dream kitchen has white, shaker-style cabinets too!

  6. Thank you so much for sharing this post. We are currently in the evaluation stage of whether we should refinish or reface our oak cabinets as well, so I am interested to see how yours turns out. We have the same challenge with lighting. Keep us posted on your progress and good luck! 🙂

  7. Your choices sound perfect for the space! I love that Home Depot offers a refacing option for those of us who are not interested in demo but need an update. Congratulations, it will feel like you have a brand new kitchen 🙂

  8. Oo – I love the direction you’re going in! I think I’m most excited to see the bookcase on the side of the island (that’s something I’d love for my dream home).

  9. Michelle I says:

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the look of the new cabinets! I would love to change ours to white as well!

  10. What a great idea! I think transforming our cabinets like this would do wonders for my worn-down kitchen!

  11. I love what you picked out! I can’t wait to see it! We also have lots of honey wood in our kitchen that we’d love to change to white. One day… 🙂

  12. Oh it is going to be so beautiful! I was lucky to have white cabinets in my little bungalow that I bought last year but she is in serious need of new flooring and counters in the kitchen to make her the cute vintage looking kitchen she is dying to be.

  13. I love the white cabinet idea. I would love to do that in my kitchen too. I want White cabinets with black granite counter tops. I think that is a classic look that wouldn’t need to be updated in a few years. I also don’t like as much overlay in your original cabinet design.

  14. What an awesome giveaway!! We built our “dream kitchen” last year, so ours don’t need refacing, but I totally would love to do this in our rental house!

You’ll love having the extended cabinets. That was a must for us when we designed ours! Here’s some pics of ours: http://managingthemanor.com/meet-our-kitchen/ Good luck w/the project. Can’t wait to see the “after”!

  15. Our Kitchen needs a complete make-over. We bought new appliances when we moved in three years ago but we need to spiff up the cabinets, new counter-tops and new flooring.

  16. Anne Haun says:

I definitely am sold on this idea – I have 12 year old builder grade cabinets and have been wanting to redo them in white. Thanks for the inspiration.

  17. jennifer agard says:

These are exactly the ones I want in my kitchen!!! I an’t wait to see how they turn out!

  18. I like our kitchen cabinets but I would definitely consider refacing them if I didn’t. Can’t wait to see your kitchen all finished.

  19. Looking forward to the reveal – I would love to do this in my kitchen!!

  20. I think refacing would be perfect for our kitchen–we have original cabinets from the 1960s!

  21. I love your color choice! I’m absolutely going with white in our new house and refacing was the way to go. Your kitchen is large and you have a nice island already. Refacing will give you more bang for your buck. The toppers are a great idea too. I hate that space in our house!

  22. LOVE the choices you made – can’t wait to see the end result!

  23. Great picks! We would love to reface our 1970s cabinets!!

  24. I LOVE your choices! I would love to have ours refaced as well. Ours are actually painted right now, but they look… painted! So refacing and adding to the height and covering more of the frame (awesome idea!) would be fabulous for our little kitchen!

  25. I love the changes you have planned for your kitchen. Anything would make a difference for our kitchen. Our house was built in 1924 and needs a lot of help. The previous owner painted the cabinets and glued wallpaper on the inner part of the cabinet door. Needless to say with use the paint has chipped and the wallpaper has started to peel. This give away would certainly be very helpful to bring our kitchen to a more modern time.

  26. I’m super excited to see how the top looks with the crown and extra shelf. That sounds like an awesome solution!

  27. I love your choices! My husband and I are just buying our first home and although I don’t have plans to change the kitchen cabinets, there are certainly other projects on my list!

  28. Looking forward to seeing how the refacing turns out! We need to do something similar in our kitchen and it sounds a heck of a lot easier than hand painting all the cabinets.

  29. Christine C. says:

I have looked into refacing, but we’re planning on changing the whole layout of our kitchen to maximize space and gain more storage.

  30. Painting our kitchen cabinets white was my first big project in our house 2 years ago. Next I think I’ll tackle the soffit above them, painting it white and adding crown molding!

  31. Can’t wait to see the finished cabinets!

  32. Alicia in Lucas says:

Anything would be great – paint / new doors – in our kitchen but i would really love a complete gut job — including layout changes.

  33. Oooh, those cabinets are so pretty! I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

  34. That’s so exciting! I have dark wood too; I have had lighter cabinets and would love them again.

  35. BrieAnn S. says:

That sounds like a great idea, that would work in our kitchen too! I hate the awkward 12″ space above our cabinets, all it does is collect dust and grease, yuck!

  36. I love the idea of white cabinets too! I can’t wait to see how it turns out. And making the cabinets taller for more space – LOVE! I think I might just come live in your kitchen. AND it will have a bookshelf… what more can you ask for?! Our kitchen is definitely an area in our home that needs some love. Totally enter me in for the drawing! =]

  37. Looks amazing! I would LOVE to reface my cabinets as well. We have a great kitchen, just full off the builder-grade “blonde” cabinets that make me nash my teeth everytime i’m in there. I’m leaning towards a light grayish shade on the cabinetry.

  38. Love it! There’s something so clean and bright about white cabinetry. I wish we had somewhere in our current kitchen for an island with a bookshelf too. Would be great for my cookbook storage 🙂

  39. Brittany D says:

I think white is the perfect choice and I would do the exact same thing in my kitchen. We are in the same boat with only one (tiny) window and those same orange-y cabinets.

  40. You’re turning your kitchen into my dream kitchen! I love the look you guys are doing… I want a white kitchen in my new house {we just sold our home + are now on the hunt for a new one} and I would truly love to have a white kitchen with light counters. I just love the crisp clean look it brings plus it just is so bright! I would totally reface my cabinets if we weren’t moving. 🙂 And you guys have ample storage in that kitchen so jealous… and the bookshelf being added to the island is an awesome idea!

  41. I want to have someone spray our cabinet like crazy!! I am so tired of golden oak!!!

  42. I really like the choices you made. i would love to have white cabinets in my kitchen. Can’t wait to see the reveal.

  43. I was just talking to someone at the Home Depot the other day about getting my cabinets resurfaced. I’m excited to see how yours turn out before I make any decisions.

  44. Sara Baker says:

I love that source photo! Painting our cabinets is on my “want to do” list….it’s been there for quite a while but it seems like an overwhelming project. I’d like to do white cabinets above, and greyish/bluish cabinets below. Can’t wait to see how your kitchen turns out.

  45. Melissa Colbeth says:

Refacing seems like it would be a great option for our cabinets, and I love the idea of filling in that blank space above the cabinets with more storage!

  46. This is a perfect option for our kitchen that I didn’t even know existed. We have the opposite challenge that you do-our kitchen is too stark white, and there are about six different shades of it between the countertops, cabinets, walls, and floor. Thanks for sharing! I definitely want to look into refacing our cabinets.

  47. Laura dassance says:

had the cabinets in our house been decent ones, I would have resurfaced, but we werent really happy with what we were starting with (just the stock ones they sell at HD), so we took the plunge and got new ones. Can’t wait to see the finshed results–your source photo was close to my original idea for ours (which got changed along the way).

  48. I love your plans for updating your kitchen, can’t wait to see how it turns out! I have these exact same builder grade honey oak colored cabinets that I am exploring updating, so I might have to try this!

  49. This is a great idea! I’m super excited about seeing the big reveal once it’s ready.

  50. I have actually been wanting to do this for a long time now. I love the idea. I’m excited about yours. Thanks for the chance to win!

  51. I love this idea…so much more storage! Love the shelf on the island too!

  52. I love the idea of doing full overlay doors! That really updates the cabinets! Can’t wait to see the finished room!

  53. I have big plans for my kitchen as well. I just hate that normal oak color for cabinets. I can’t wait to have something different. Thanks for the giveaway!

  54. Yeah, I am definitely looking forward to the “after”! I love all the ideas and the white cabinets….I am converting to a true believer after I’ve seen it done in a friend’s house. How open and welcoming it makes it look. Love it!

  55. I love the idea of refacing- it sometimes seems like a waste when people tear out perfectly good cabinets just to change the color or whatnot. I look forward to seeing your updates!

  56. Jessica S says:

I would love to have white cabinets, but my husband likes the wood! I”m going to have to try to change the look with new hinges and hardware instead!

  57. I love the style you chose! It’s going to look so good! I would love to have our cabinets refaced! Ours are oak as well… I want white uppers with dark gray lowers!

  58. OHmygoodness, I can’t wait to see the final kitchen reveal! SO EXCITING!! I’d love to do this for my mother-in-law’s kitchen too. She needs it badly!

  59. Christine McDonald says:

I think it’s a great idea! We have new cabinets but this would be the perfect solution for my sister who has the same kitchen situation as you! Would love to win the Home Depot gift card for some improvements in our laundry room!

  60. I am dying to redo our builders basic cabinets!!! I would love white cabinets on the top with added storage like you are doing and a dark wood for the bottom cabinets. Good luck with your renovation!!!

  61. I can’t wait to see your reveal! My kitchen needs a major face lift!!

  62. Your kitchen is going to look a-mazing! I’m so jealous! I definitely want to paint our kitchen cabinets white but I’m still working on convincing the hubby.

  63. Re-facing would be a great option for us. We’re in the process of buying a house, and the kitchen is the one space that really needs a lot of work. The cabinets that exist are ok, but are hung way too high, and they’re the same orange-y oak color, which makes the kitchen really dark! Ultimately, I’d like to make them white and add a big island like yours, but we’re going to need to take out part of a wall to do it, so that Home Depot gift card would really come in handy 🙂

  64. Jessica O says:

Good luck with your remodel, it’s going to be fabulous! I’d love to grab some Home Depot supplies to upgrade our builder-grade home!

  65. white kitchens are the way to go! you and i basically have the same “before” kitchen as we had the exact same stain oak cabinets with white formica countertop, but we have white appliances. however, we are in the midst of a kitchen update, and we too refaced our cabinets white. we used a painting company who also filled in the oak wood grains, which made all the difference. the cabinets look smooth, clean, and modern. are you planning on doing that, too? we are just finishing up with an extra wall of mosaic glass backsplash and changing our white 12″ square tile floor to a natural stone (as the current tile pumps up against a dark mahogany stain oak floors). we started july 8: i hope yours doesn’t take as long! 🙂

  66. I’m intrigued by adding storage on the top of your cabinets–can’t wait to see the after photos! My husband and I are currently saving up to reface our cabinets in a two-tone (light uppers/dark lowers) paint. The previous owners left us awesome cabinetry sadly covered in scratches and scraps. Sigh.

  67. Marie in Va says:

Can’t wait to see how the longer cabinet doors work to give the extra space. We have the same problem.
    Love your choice of white!

  68. I love the look of your new cabinets! That would be my dream kitchen!

  69. Refacing the cabinets is so so smart! My kitchen cabinets could use them too!

  70. eileen marie says:

I’m excited to see your finished product! I love the white & the full overlay! Can’t wait to see the hardware you choose! We need to shift our layout, but I’d still consider this option to save our existing cabinetry where possible.
PS: My earlier comment disappeared into the ether -this is not meant to be a duplicate.

  71. I hate my cupboards! I think this would be a great option!

  72. Love your choices…white kitchen cabinets are my ultimate dream and I can’t wait to see your final reveal.

  73. Karen Haley says:

We have a lot of wood going on in our kitchen, too. Refacing is the perfect plan!

  74. We just redid our kitchen last summer. Living through it was a nightmare, but I LOVE the end result. Good Luck with your makeover.

  75. I am sooooooo on the white cabinet bandwagon! My early 80s particle board cabinets desperately need a similar treatment!

  76. We went through this process last fall! It makes such a difference in your kitchen. I can’t wait to see it when its all done and Im sure you can’t wait till its all done, right?!

    Laura
    House Envy

  77. Love your choice of style and color. I am almond laminate (yuk) and would love to reface/replace. Hopefully someday- septic needs replacement and THAT can’t wait! Post as soon as you finish-can’t wait to see your masterpiece.

  78. I think the choices you’ve made thus far for you kitchen are adorable! I’m excited to see how everything turns out. The few pictures I’ve seen of the work they’ve already done looks amazing!! I think refacing would be a great option for our kitchen. The only downside is we don’t have very many cabinets, so we’d end up having to add more. Otherwise, it seems like a very affordable option for upgrading a kitchen!

  79. We are getting our cabinets refaced. I’m very excited and amazed at how good refacing looks. Can’t wait to see your new look.

    1. Elizabeth says:

I love your choices! We have a VERY similar kitchen- oak cabinets with too much wasted space above them, and we are absolutely considering different options to update the look. Painting the walls and cabinets are a priority!

  80. Elizabeth F. says:

I love your choices! We have a VERY similar kitchen- oak cabinets with too much wasted space above them, and we are absolutely considering different options to update the look. Painting the walls and cabinets are a priority!

  81. Your kitchen will be fabulous with the new doors and refacing. Love your idea to add a space for cookbooks at the end of your island. My husband and I bought a 150 year old house and we cannot wait to get started on the kitchen!

  82. So excited to see your new kitchen!

  83. Love it! My kitchen needs a refacing job pretty badly also…

  84. I love your kitchen layout! Our kitchen is really awkward and needs a lot of loving between that, the terra cotta tile counter top, peel and stick vinyl flooring, and cabinet doors that are falling off. :/ Your blog definitely gives us lots of ideas of what we can do to revive it! Thank you!

  85. I love the idea of resurfacing kitchen cabinets. I had honey oak cabinets in my old kitchen too and knew I just couldn’t live with them. We totally gutted the kitchen and made a new lay-out with an island and hickory cabinets. It is my dream kitchen (well, mini-sized!) and I just love it! One can never have enough storage in a kitchen, but it does help keep a clamp on those small appliances that I yearn for. Love yours!

  86. I love the cabinets! My kitchen needs this too!

  87. I loooove white cabinets – I think this will look fabulous. Are you re-doing the counters as well?

  88. Jessie C. says:

Love the makeover, floor, cabinet and counter top color are great, clean and bright.

  90. Love the new kitchen design. I can’t wait to see the big reveal. I love white cabinets, in fact our ugly wood ones were the first thing we painted in our first house and I always loved the white.

  91. Sounds like a wonderful plan! I would love a white kitchen!

  92. Love the cabinet choice! Are you leaving your countertops?

  93. I can’t wait to see how it turns out! I love the color for the cabinets.

  94. I can’t wait to see the finished project! I love the idea of just refacing our cabinets but unfortunately they are in need of much more than that. Eventually we’ll be replacing all of them and going with a different layout too. Last kitchen we remodeled we went with cabinets from Home Depot and they were wonderful throughout the process! Good luck with your kitchen!

  95. I love your choices! the clean bright look of white cabinets are just so beautiful

  96. Love the white cabinets!!!! Can’t wait to see the progress! thanks for the great giveaway 🙂

  97. We love the layout of our kitchen too so refacing would be an option for us. Can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

  98. Hi Chelsea,
I’m wondering what color is on your kitchen walls. It looks similar to the color in my living room. I too have a smallish kitchen with one window and builder grade oak cabinets. I CAN’T WAIT to tackle our kitchen (hopefully in the coming year). I’m so excited to see the reveal.

  99. Refacing would also be perfect for our kitchen as the cabinets are in physically great shape (with adequate space) but I loathe the light wood color. I’d love, love, love to reface to the antique white color with brown accents and oil rubbed bronze hardware! My kitchen dream 🙂

  100. Can’t wait to see it all come together. We are going making our cabinet spacing as close as possible. We can’t do full inlay since it’s crazy expensive, but anything will be an improvement over the cabinets in the last house!

  101. I love that you are refacing the cabinets rather than throwing them out completely, so much more green!

  102. I am loving that you are reusing your cabinets. A neighbor just redid his kitchen and threw away beautiful cupboards that could have been salvaged. I wanted to pull them out of the dumpster myself! An awwwweeeesome giveaway!

  103. I think that’s a great idea to add a bookshelf to the island!

  104. I love it!! We’re also hoping to refinish our cabinets but we’re too cheap to hire someone to do it. I dreaming of taking like 3.5 ft of wall out reconfiguring the kitchen and adding an island…with a bookcase at the end! 🙂

  105. It’s going to be beautiful! Can’t wait to see the final result.

  106. I love how you are refacing your cabinets, they will look great! I long for whit cabinets in our house. Unfortunately they are just cheap laminate.

  107. Husband and I just submitted an offer on what will hopefully be our first home 🙂 . The upside: awesome space and huge yard. The downside: house hasn’t been touched since the mid-60s and is in major need of TLC – especially the kitchen! Can’t wait to see how it all turns out!

  108. Dawn Warriner-Herman says:

Thanks for the chance to win!!!

  109. We’re doing almost the exact same thing! It’s exciting!

  110. Fantastic idea. Can’t wait to follow you on this journey.

  111. Cost efficient and looks great! Love it!

  112. I love it. I love the color of my cabinets (cherry), but I think it makes everything too dark. I might have to look into this!

  113. I like your choices. We have full overlay cabinets and I love them. I also think the bookshelf fitting on that end of the island is perfect and you are going to love it! I would not want to resurface my cabinets because I love them, but I want to build myself an island. I don’t have one because the ones the builders offered with our big kitchen were either tiny or a huge checkmark shaped thing I thought would look dated. Plus, I don’t even like it now… so I know I would not love it in ten years.

I can’t wait to see your kitchen with the updates.

  114. resurfacing would be a viable option but i prefer all new cabinets

  115. i love your choices – the kitchen cabinets are pretty much similar to what I have now – LOVE the white bathroom cabinets – not sure if refacing would be for me I would most likely replace

  116. I love the idea of a bookshelf. I’m not a huge fan of white cabinets but I’ve only experienced outdated white ones in my old apartment. Maybe new ones would be ok. 🙂

  117. I think you made great choices!

  118. Excellent website. Plenty of useful information here. I’m sending it to several pals ans also sharing in delicious. And of course, thank you on your effort!

  119. This is exactly what my kitchen needs! I don’t want to tear out the whole thing… just needs an up-grade!

  120. I would probably put that money toward replacing our cabinets. Our cheapest option would be to paint them, but it’d be a lot of work (our kitchen is LARGE and stuffed to the gills with dark cabinets) and, from what I can tell, they’re more particle board than anything else. Either way, they definitely need a face lift!

  121. I can’t wait to see your results. My cabinets aren’t bad so I can’t justify the possibility of ruining them with a diy. If I had the help of Home Depot I would totally make take the plunge.

  122. Love the idea! Sadly, my poor kitchen has a terrible layout, so it wouldn’t work for me. I’ll need a complete redo, so will need a whole kitchen full of cabinets, flooring, cabinets, etc. Would sure love Home Depot’s involvement!

  123. I love the refacing option — we’re hoping to do some minor renovations in the kitchen this spring to add an island/increase storage space, but the refacing idea may be phase 2 (we have wood cabinets with wood floors) too.

    Thanks!

  124. We also have honey oak cabinets and I am doing everything I can to love them…because my husband won’t let me paint them! What is it about men and painting on wood?!?!!? We’re painting the kitchen, updating lighting, hardware and faucets just so that I can learn to love them, but refacing would be fantastic!

  125. I do like the cabinet refacing because I love the layout of our kitchen. We are not doing any remodeling in the kitchen right now but will consider it when we do in a few years. Can’t wait to see how yours turns out.

  126. We are cursed with the builder grade honey oak cabinets too! I’d love to make them white and also add crown moulding to add some height and reduce some of that wasted space. I can’t wait to see what you do with your kitchen. Momma needs some inspiration to get motivated and start working on this project!!

  127. I recently bought a bungalow with white cabinets – I love them but seriously need to get new countertops and a new floor to tie the room together to match her age (1917). I can’t wait to see your finished product.
    Susan

  128. I love the cabinet style in the bathroom pic that you shared. My kitchen is in dire need, but I think the first thing I would do is get rid of the faux brick (z-brick I think they call it) wall and update the wainscotting. Good luck with your project!

  129. hollie jahnke says:

I love the bathroom! We’ve been looking for new ideas for ours. Looks great!

  130. What a great vision for your updated kitchen! For me, a much-needed kitchen overhaul would include new flooring to replace the cracked tile, new countertops to move us into this century, and maybe even new cabinet doors! It’s exciting just thinking about it. 🙂

  131. Yes, that is exactly what I want to do with my cabinets! That’s next on my list (or shall we say my husbands list) of to do’s. Would LOVE to win so I could also get that glass tile back splash I have been drooling over forever!!!! Can’t wait to see it done!

  132. I would love to have Home Depot work with me on my builder grade, sort of ugly, but hey it feeds the kids, kitchen! thanks for the great giveaway!

  133. I really like your cabinet choices

  134. Sharlene Piscitelli says:

Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

  135. I love what you have chosen for your makeover! I think re-facing the cabinets is such a great idea! I would <3 to win this giveaway and upgrade my kitchen!

  136. Michelle B says:

New cabinets are so fresh and beautiful! A change of look can make such a huge difference! Nicely done 🙂

  137. Christie Roberts says:

I agree… white was the way to go! btw, the large fruit pics on the wall is a really cute idea! 🙂

  138. Would be a dream to reface our old cabinets!

  139. I can’t wait to see the finished product! It sounds like it will be perfect! I too have only one window in my kitchen and a very small kitchen (we call it the cave because it’s so dark). I’d love to brighten it all up with new lighter cabinets and backsplash! Cabinet refacing sounds like the way to go! 🙂

  140. erin kreutzer says:

I love the idea of the white cabinets. Our kitchen is super small and I think the white cabinets would make it look so much larger. We changed the floors to a lighter laminate but that just doesn’t make it seem bigger than we thought it wood. Refacing would be the perfect idea!

I LOVE this idea. I didn’t know refacing was a possibility! It sounds so fantastic for our kitchen. I would love to win the $1,000 gift so I could give our drab 80s kitchen new life!

  142. Good luck with the reno! It is so exciting to do. We just finished a complete remodel of our kitchen only to turn around and sell it for a new project house! Using the space above is just the best idea. We took out that silly soffit and extended the cabinets. It looks amazingly better! Our new to us home would benefit from refacing, and flooring, and appliances, and counter tops…. Hopefully the entire kitchen won’t have to go when we get a chance to redo it too!

  143. Sounds like a great plan. We put in light maple cabinets about 5 years ago (from Home Depot), but I keep seeing all of these white cabinets that I love. I’m guessing some time in the future we’ll re-face or paint them.
We also have a space above our cabinets, but only a few inches. I’m ready to add crown molding if I can get my husband to agree (since he’ll have to do a lot of the work!).
By the way, I would love to win the $1000 gift card. I have so many projects that need to be finished in our fixer-upper.

  144. Love your ideas here. Sadly refacing is not enough to save our desperate kitchen. The previous owners of our house DIY’ed the cabinets completely… we have drawer fronts nailed into the cabinet face with no drawers behind them, cabinet bottoms that bow so badly you could do skateboard tricks, etc. You get the idea :-).

Can’t wait to see your “after”!

  145. Can’t wait to see the final results!

We are in the early stages of planning a kitchen remodel, but ours will be a total gut job. Our current kitchen is the stuff of nightmares: peeling linoleum floors, cheap 70’s cabinets, paneling

  146. Stephanie says:

Looking forward to the end result. I love the idea of white cabinets as they make a kitchen brighter. We have a galley kitchen with 1970’s cabinets that have since been painted an off-white color and hope to change out the cabinets in the future. Will stay tuned for your “after” results!

  147. Mary Beth Elderton says:

Those sound like wonderful choices! We recently bought a 1950’s home and immediately re-did the kitchen. In our case, we actually practically started over down to plumbing, electric, and completely new walls and cabinets. Now on to the bathroom!

  148. Stephanie V. says:

I love it! old kitchen with no money to fix so YES resurfacing totally an option for us!
    tvollowitz at aol dot com

  149. Chrystal D says:

I’m not sure if it would work in my kitchen or not, everything is old & falling apart just about!

  150. Refacing the cabinets is the perfect option! The white color goes with everything and is a classic! We are moving into a new home and need some ideas!

  151. A friend uses Home Depot for refacing and it turned out awesome! Know you’ll be happy too!

  152. Emily Morelli says:

Refacing the cabinets would be a great start to remodeling our kitchen but we would definitely need new floors, counter tops and a back splash to make a difference.

  153. Love white cabinets! Bet they will look great. I wish I had room for a bookshelf in my kitchen!

  154. Looks great! My kitchen sure could use a bit of a makeover!

  155. Margaret Smith says:

I love your choice. I also love white cabinets. They’ll look great with the floor that you have too.
    Thanks so much.

  156. Tabitha P. says:

I think your chocies were great!
it would work in our kitchen,it’s too small to really do anything to.

  157. I love your layout and wish I could recreate it! We’re in desperate need of a new stove, but I’d love to be able to replace our kitchen island with something more modern.

  158. jose benavides says:

refacing would be ideal for my kitchen .. I love the styles so much

  159. Cynthia C says:

The white should really brighten things up for you. Hope you are pleased with your choices.

  160. We just put in brand new cabinets in our house 2 years ago so it’s not the route we went, but my mom is prepping to reface her kitchen rather than buying new because she has cabinets in great condition they are just an old style

    demureprincess7(at)gmail(dot)com

  161. Lisa Brown says:

I like what you did, looks great. I could not reface; my cabinets are warped and need to be replaced.
    jslbrown_03 at yahoo dot com

  162. brandy g. says:

I would love the White Cabinets too. My kitchen is so dated! I have been wanting to update my kitchen for a couple of years, just trying to find the tine to do it.

  163. Anastasia says:

I love it! I think refacing would be great for me! A wonderful way to change things up without having to spend as much money or do anything too drastic 🙂

  164. I love your choices! I don’t have to reface my kitchen but there is some work to be done.

  165. My kitchen could use the refacing. I like a traditional country sort of look.

  166. Tari Lawson says:

I love the idea of the bookshelf added to the island. The cabinets you picked seem nice as well. Are you going to change the countertops?

  167. I would LOVE to reface our kitchen cabinets! They need it badly! I’m so excited to see how yours turns out, Chelsea! Looks like it’s going to be beautiful!

    ~Abby =)

  168. mickeyfan says:

We just finished a kitchen tear out and replace. Refacing wasn’t an option as our kitchen was done last in the 1930’s (we think) and had “custom made” cabinets that were really strange shapes. It was a total mess! I like your choice, but know that I am not neat enough for white!

  169. Tracy L Davis says:

I love the style you chose! I would love it in my kitchen.

  170. Kim Drolet says:

I need more cabinets really bad. I would love to redo my kitchen with two tone cabinets!!!!

  171. Sarah Hirsch says:

I think your choices sound good. I would love to be able to reface my cabinets, but they are not wood (they are those 80’s cabinets (formica maybe?)) and I’d rather get wood ones

  172. Great detailed sharing! Your plans have been very well executed and add beauty and functionality to your home. It all looks great. I would love to share some of the projects I have planned if they ever become a reality. Refacing would not be prefect for our kitchen because we have the full cabinets to the ceiling with the glass doors. But a lot of your ideas would work for us. Would love to add a shelf for our many kitchen books.

  173. Jacob LaFountaine says:

Honestly I want to destroy everything and start over with a clean look

  174. Steve Stone says:

I love all the choices and refacing makes cost effective sense. thanks.

  175. Michelle Weaver says:

I love it! love the light color of the wood. Our kitchen could definately use that.

  176. I love the refacing of the cabinets. I will definitely be looking into this for our kitchen.

  177. Mary Calabrese says:

Refacing the cabinets is such a great idea. It would work in my kitchen, except we painted them all white.

  178. Refacing is a great way to go! It saves money you can spend on other things for that perfect kitchen! It is looking great.

  179. This is a great money saving idea! We have new kitchen cabinets, but this would be great in our bathrooms!

  180. Kyl Neusch says:

good choices, like the good look

  181. Amity Johnson says:

Great choices, we could absolutely use a re-everything in our kitchen 🙂

  182. What a timely post. We are in the process of deciding what to do with out Kitchen makeover. Love the direction you are going I know we want White cabinets, but that is as far as we have gotten at this point

  183. Stephanie Larison says:

I think it looks great! Our kitchen is so outdated it looks horrible, it could definitely use a face lift!

  184. You and Brad made the right choice. You still have the essential and practical storage you need, you get the cosmetic look of the kitchen you both want and kudos to you, you recycled, Mother Nature thanks you. Hat trick, kitchen style 🙂

  185. Susan Chester says:

I would love to reface my cabinets. They are all chipped and ugly.
    smchester at gmail dot com

  186. christopher h says:

I think you’ve made good choice, my parents refaced their kitchen cabinets a few years ago and are very happy

  187. I love the choices you made. i recently had new floors put down in my kitchen and now the cabinets look even more drab. They could seriously use a face lift. My counter tops are really in worse shape.

  188. I would love to do the exact same thing to my cabinets…we’ve been debating it over 2 years now!

  189. Kathleen RG says:

    Great plan, open and airy

  190. The countertop (in the pics) looks cheap.

  191. I dream of a white kitchen! It’s going to be beautiful!

  192. Sadly, my cabinets in my new home need a lot more TLC than just resurfacing. I could really use this Home depot gift Card!

  193. I like simple, white kitchens. I like the bright, clean energy.

  194. Terry Cross says:

I love your choices! Mine could surely use refacing. I will be considering that when the budget allows.

  195. Barbara Long says:

I like your choice of white, especially since you only have the one window so lighter is better for the area. I’m not sure if refacing our cabinets would work due to their age and condition but it is something I would look into when I have funds to update them.

    [email protected]

  196. joseph gersch says:

refacing would be great for our old cabinets

  197. I love your choices. I’m not sure that refacing would work for us – we need deeper cabinets or we need to move some things around (a gigantic island and the location of the dishwasher) in order to make it easier to access the one cabinet that is deep enough to hold our dinner plates. The prior owners obviously didn’t consult me before building this kitchen. Gosh!

  198. We have maple cabinets that I love. I think white cabinets are very sleek, though. I wouldn’t paint over ours but I think your kitchen would look awesome! Your inspiration photo is really pretty.

  199. I love what you did, I think resurfacing is a great way to freshen up a kitchen.

  200. Stephanie Gossett says:

I love your choices. We seem to have the same look in mind. I really understand how it is to want to change something for so long. I think that this really would be a good option for us. I loved your pictures and your explanation of the products. Thank you for this chance. This would be a dream come true for us! I cannot imagine winning!

    [email protected]

  201. Can’t wait to see this all finished! Great choices and you will love how beautiful your kitchen looks when the oak is gone and the cabinets are light and bright! I would love some money to get new counter tops for our kitchen, they are 12 years old and laminate which is chipping.

  202. Hoosierburgher says:

I LOVE the look! If we didn’t rent, and I like the layout, I would have made the exact same decision!

  203. I’ve seen a kitchen where the owners decided to save money, and reface the cabinets. I was amazed at the difference, and can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

  204. Can’t wait to see your kitchen when the cabinets are done! We’re currently finishing our basement laundry room and I have my eye on cabinets from Home Depot too!

  205. Cant wait to see the results! i love the MS Cabinet line @ The HD

  206. WOW! I had NO IDEA that this process of refacing even existed! That’s awesome! Sounds like the perfect way to go if you need some kitchen updating. Definitely will keep that in mind when we purchase a home of our own 😀

  207. crystal smith says:

I love your choices! Bright and open feeling 🙂 We recently just bought a new home and I think resurfacing would be a GREAT option for our kitchen- Im definitely going to have to look into this!

  208. I love your choices, white kitchens are my favorite- so open and airy. And I can completely empathize with wanting and waiting to change it for such a long time! Thanks for the chance to win!

  209. I love the clean look of your new cabinets–can’t wait to see what it looks like in your kitchen!

We actually just redid our floor in our kitchen, and I can’t believe the difference something as minor as that made!

  210. I’ve been debating about whether to reface or just paint my honey oak cabinets white. The door design isn’t awful and painting would be less expensive, so I may do that as a phase one solution. That will also help me see how yours come out! I’m really curious about the toppers and how those will look. I don’t hate the space above my cabinets but I do think it could be prettier/cleaner (as in less dust and gunk collecting up there) if it were more of an open shelf instead of just a rough cabinet top. I’m having time visualizing what you’re doing (will the topper have doors, or just be open?) but I am intrigued by the idea!

  212. Jeanette Ardiente says:

Your kitchen looks so wonderful! It would take much more than refacing to make our kitchen look better.

  213. tina reynolds says:

First off I love the size and layout of your kitchen what an amazing space to work with. I love you choice it looks so fresh and modern. I think it will really make the room fresh and stand out. I look forward to seeing your pictures of the finished design.

  214. Great choices! I think that is such a good idea to make a drastic impact in a kitchen. I would love to have gray cabinets.

  215. I think its a great idea and the kitchen looks awesome . My kitchen really needs a make over because it is stuck in the 70’s. I would love new cabinets and counter tops !

  216. I love your choices! I’d pick basically the same thing for my Kitchen!

  217. the new kitchen looks gorgeous! i want something just like that

  218. I love what you did with refacing but it wouldn’t work for us because the insides ere worse than the outside. We gutted the kitchen but need to do the bathroom next.

  219. It would only be a drop in the bucket towards renovating our compact kitchen, but anything would help.

  220. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. I love the idea of having the top of the cabinets become a shelf. We have soffets-same waste of space.

  221. The looks wonderful. Your kitchen should be in a magazine, because so nice.

  222. Hannah Fischbach says:

I love the clean look with so much white. It;s refreshing and would definitely do wonders to my home!

  223. Eugenia Hall says:

Timely post! We’re just about to start the major renovation work on our new kitchen and we need to make all of these same decisions.

  224. David Emerick III says:

I need to do a whole lot of work on my place.

  225. Michelle S says:

I like the clean cut look of the kitchen. Yes, my kitchen could use a re-surfacing.

  226. tamatha hunter says:

our cabinets are 2 different colors peach on one wall & oak on the other (what were they thinking?) would love to be able to make them all cohesive.

  227. Your choices are great…We need a whole cabinet rehab, they are outdated and ugly!

  228. Jennifer H. says:

I love white cabinets. It makes the kitchen look fresh and bigger. Resurfacing is a great idea. Our cabinets are fine structurally, but we could use an update.

  229. I like the use of the white counter tops it really brighten ups the kitchen.

  230. Heather B says:

I think your kitchen will look great! I would actually love to do my counter more than my cupboards (though I want to do those too) we have this ugly blue counter that was all stained when we bought the house. I got some out but there are spots that are completely ruined!

  231. I love your kitchen and how clean and crisp it looks!! I would love to do a kitchen makeover!

  232. I love white cabinets! Unfortunately, my kitchen has no counter or storage space, so it’s going to require more than just resurfacing.

  233. I love the look you’re going for – can wait to see the finished product!

I would love to do the same thing – our cabinets are seriously outdated!

  234. Refacing would be perfect for our kitchen. We’ve already flipped the doors, added picture frame molding, painted them high gloss and used wallpaper for the center. This is the next logical step.

    ky2here at msn dot com

  235. Amy Dunham says:

I have just a small kitchen area… I would love to get it made over so it was the bling of my house. I would definitely add more cabinets and some sort of eating island/area. Thank you for your consideration.

  236. Love Home Depot, just went last night and bought a corner cat sander! I could buy a miter saw and a table saw, and much more, with $1000! woohoo. Excited to see your new cabinets.

  237. I love the sleek new look of your cabinets and did not know refacing existed! My dream wish for my kitchen is to repaint it and fix our counters. There’s a big burn mark on it that I hide with a basket but it’d be nice to finally fix that. Thanks for the chance!

  238. Your plan sounds brilliant! I love the addition of the bookshelves. I like my cabinets and layout but would love to paint mine a fresh color. I can’t wait to see your reveal!

  239. Tabathia B says:

Yes I think it looks great

    tbarrettno1 at gmail dot com

  240. I love white cabinets and have been in the process of switching all of mine over to them for the last few years. I love the multiple looks you can achieve simply just by changing the wall color or switching to new towels. With the white I feel they are so much more versatile than the wood.

  241. they look great, ours were too ancient to just reface, we redid all the cabinets a few years ago

  242. I wish we could reface our cabinets! Besides the cost that we couldn’t afford, we rent. But the cabinets here are terribly old and weren’t cared for well by previous owners so are in pretty bad shape.

  243. Melissa L says:

OMG I would love to do my kitchen over! We bought our house 3 years ago and we have 1950 country style cabinets and linoleum floors yuck! I would buy new cabinets and try to do most of the work our self’s. We wouldn’t be able to reface them because of the awkward layout. 🙁 Your ideas look awesome though! Good Luck with your plans!

  244. My cabinets do not nee refacing, but my floor needs to be replaced because of water leaking from my dishwasher and the flooring is coming up. It is not expensive flooring but we don’t have the money to replace it.

  245. RICHARD LICATA says:

    I WANT TO WIN

  246. Mya Murphy says:

It looks awesome already and I want to see the finals results!!! Wow, just wow!!! My kitchen has seen better days, I have to admit. It’s totally 70’s style 😛

  247. Tanya White says:

Those are the same cabinets I have and I love them! I think refacing is a great idea I never knew you could do that, it sure beats replacing the whole cabinet and i am sure it is a whole lot cheaper. I bet it will look amazing.

  248. Jill Myrick says:

I love the ideas that you have in place for your kitchen, especially the bookcase on the end of the island. I would love to be able to reface our cabinets. We have an al white kitchen including counters cabinets and floor. So I understand about you wanting to break the wood up because I seem really overwhelmed in white at times. Being able to reface my cabinets would definitely add something nice to my kitchen as all of the white and children just do not mix.

  256. I think refacing would be a help to my kichen

  273. I like the white cabinets idea! It will enhance all the light that you currently have in there. And I HEAR YOU about the space on top of the cabinets. Sheesh! That should be outlawed. I can’t figure out what to do with ours!

  312. The cabinets are the exact color I am looking for in my kitchen. Currently, they do not match the paneling and it bothers me. Thanks for the opportunity to win.

I love the choices you made- I think it will compliment the space accordingly. (jealous!!)

  314. Kendra Gillilan says:

I love the choices, that wood look is my fave and sure would like to do that with my kitchen….your cupboards are awesome

  315. thischickwins says:

your choices seem nice, and refacing looks like a good idea since your existing cupboards don’t have any textural details in the middle

  316. Lanicsha Wynn says:

I love the choice, simple yet so comforting, with kids in the house I couldn’t imagine having white anything. Not to mention white goes with everything. My cabinets were brand new where I just moved, so I will enjoy them for a bit, they are dark wood, cute but, I definitely have something else in mind, but nonetheless, you made a great choice.

  317. ANGELA SWINSON says:

I love the idea of an island bookcase – very convenient!

  318. Joanna Allison says:

  322. Heather S says:

I think it is a good idea. I painted my cabinets and they look so clean and fresh. I put stainless knobs on too.

  323. Trisha McKee says:

Such a lightened space now- i think it opens up the room. I definitely want to redo the kitchen. My kitchen is oddly shaped, narrow, and I’d love something that opens it up a bit more.

  324. jodi goins says:

      love to resurface cabinets

  330. Nice! A bookcase in the kitchen is a great idea. I have several stashed away that would look great on display. We’re in dire need of an update and new floors. Enjoy your new space! 🙂

  331. I love white cabinets too, but I just bought a house (today!) with fairly new Ikea cabinets. I can live with them for a while. But I do love your idea to put in a bookcase at the end of the island. That’s something I can do that I hadn’t thought of. So glad I stopped by. Can’t wait to see your finished kitchen.

  332. Erica Best says:

I love this ideal and yes new facing would work

  333. Looks great! Resurfacing instead of replacing makes so much sense if the cabinets are in good shape.

  334. It looks wonderful – very open and airy, but also warm and inviting. Personally I really need new countertops. We have small tiles – it’s not flat and smooth and the grout always looks nasty.

  335. I love your cabinet choice! I would so like to reface our cabinets, which are very country and not really our style. We have made the best of things by painting them white and changing the pulls.

  336. I would renew for sure. My cabinets are cheap and falling apart. Home Depot has some beautiful cabinets and counter tops. Would love to RENEW!!!!! Thanks for the post. Love your kitchen!

I definitely think refacing would be perfect for our cabinets since we can’t afford new ones.

  341. Your choices are great. I would love to reface my bathroom cabinets. They need it morE than my kitchen. Thanks.

  342. Erin Webb says:

Hope you post after pics! I’ve got these same cabinets, with dark tile floor and only one window–definitely need to lighten it up. Plus, if I get rid of the outdated fluorescent light, I’m really concerned it will feel like a cave! Good luck!

  343. Andrina G says:

I think it turned out great. We definetly need to reface our cabinets. We made the mistake of trying to restain them. I don’t know what we did wrong but they look awful. My kitchen needs help badly.

  344. I am not really into honey oak but I like the layout of the choice you made for the kitchen. I really really like the choices for the bathroom though. Very pretty. My kitchen would be perfect for refacing. Would love to do it too!

  345. I think your choices will look good. I have not heard of refacing but my cabinets are so old I think it would be better to just replace them. I would also love to replace the flooring.

  346. I love your choices! It will look great! Our kitchen is pretty new, so it’s not in the plans for us for awhile. But it is a great option for the future.

  347. I really like your idea of toppers. I currently have a collection of tins displayed at the top of my cabinets, but I’m sure they need cleaning and climbing a ladder to clean a display isn’t my idea of fun.
I think refacing would be perfect for my kitchen. The cabinets are in great shape, but I’d love to change the look.

  348. Sonya Morris says:

I love what you have done! Our house is over 30 years old and the people who lived here before us had all boys and the kitchen cabinets were one of the first things I tackled. I wish I would have known about refacing the cabinets because I sanded and repainted them only to rip them out about ten years later! Refacing them would have been a lot easier and less expensive than repainting and eventually replacing!

  349. Love your kitchen. I would have to replace everything in mine to even look like a place you want to be in. Thanks for the post too!

  353. I like the cabinet refacing. I would like to try that in my kitchen.

  354. I know It sounds crazy, but I love the 90’s clean look. I wouldn’t mind custom white cabinets. Thanks for sharing! I had fun.
