A Lesson in Scale

I feel like a lot of us struggle with scale and proportion in our homes. I’ve always had an issue in our house because of the vaulted ceilings, which results in several really tall walls throughout our house.

I had known for a while that the 16″ x 20″ frames I hung on the wall in our great room were too small for the space, but I tended to just ignore it.

See how wimpy they look on this big, tall wall?

When I came across some inexpensive 24″ x 36″ IKEA ribba frames, I instantly knew they’d be a great option. But before I pulled the trigger, I did my little trick for test driving wall art sizes.

All I do is take some painters tape and create the sizes of the frames on the wall.

While the scale and proportion may not be perfect, it’s a helluva lot better than what I was working with.

And I couldn’t beat $60 for the whole display.

Now I just need to find some fall-ish wrapping paper to put in the frames come September/October.

The moral of this story is that scale and proportion are key. And when in doubt, I think it’s always better to go bigger rather than smaller.
