2013 Home Goals

I’m sharing my 2013 home goals today in order to hold myself accountable for getting stuff done around the house this year. It’s like those people who resolve to lose weight and tell you to slap the donut from their hand if you see them indulging. Seriously, I need to be held accountable. Slap the proverbial donut from my hand.

Now, onto the goals.

Goal #1: Paint the bathroom vanities.
I’m over the honey oak. The end.

Goal #2:  Revamp our master bedroom walk-in closet.
We want to move the current clothes racks higher and add some lower clothes racks and extra storage.

Goal #3:  Finish the kitchen make-over.
I painted the kitchen in August. Now it’s time to paint the cabinets and island and add a back splash. I have some other ideas floating around in my head, but I can’t share them because I want it to be a surprise.

Goal #4:  Organize our pantry.
Seriously. It’s a hot mess.

Goal #5:  Get the dining room section of our great room together.
This includes finishing the 7 piece dining set I’ve been working on for four, yes, FOUR months. I’m the worst at starting projects then going all ADD and moving on to another project. Maybe this should be one of my New Year’s resolutions– get a handle on my DIY Project ADD. I also need to move my late grandparents’ antique buffet into the dining room (it’s currently in the garage with the dining set) and decide if I want to paint it. Like the kitchen, I have some other ideas but they will remain a secret. Here’s a before photo of the dining set.

Goal #6: Add shelving in the laundry/utility room.
Now that we have a new water softener, there’s an empty space in our laundry/utility room where the brine tank for our old water softener used to be.

Goal #7: Finish my home office/craft room.
Uh, I’ve been working on this room for well over a year now. I’m telling you, I have a severe case of DIY Project ADD. But seriously, I’ve been working on this room the past couple days. I’ll hopefully finish it by, hmmm, May. Here’s a before photo of the room. Please don’t judge me.

Goal #8:  Add additional shelving in home office/craft room closet.
I need more storage for all of my sewing, craft, and home decor stuff.

Goal #9:  Freshen up our master bedroom.
I don’t want to share my idea because I’d want it to be a surprise.

Goal #10:  Paint the great room.
I would have done this a long time ago if I didn’t need scaffolding. With the vaulted ceilings, the walls are 12-13 feet in most places. Anyone know how expensive it is to rent scaffolding? I’m afraid to use a tall leaning ladder because I don’t want to risk damaging the walls.

So there you go. My lofty goals for 2013. I figure I have a year. But we’ll see how much I can get done. Feel free to tweet or Facebook message me and ask me if I’m doing work. Just don’t be annoying about it.

What are some of your home goals for this year?
Do you suffer from DIY Project ADD? We should start a support group.

  1. Girl, I SO have project ADD!! Good luck with your projects! You’ve got some extensive work, but it will be worth it for sure!

  2. Oh my goodness, we have very similar goals and I have the same DIY ADD. I hate our honey oak bathroom cabinetry, our master bedroom and office are both a hot mess as well. Maybe we can keep each other accountable?!

  3. Great goals! Very inspiring! I have lofty goals but then my 3 little people seem to put them on hold and nothing gets finished, so I can relate. I look forward to seeing your finished projects. No pressure, but here’s a quick slap! 🙂

  4. Actually my goal is to ADD furniture! LOL
I have an empty apartment and will be filling it up with “stuff” in the next month and a half.

  5. I would join the project ADD support group in a hot second!… The biggest issue is once I put something off and it’s out of my mind, it gets lost into the procrastination corner. Good luck coming back from that, project!

  6. Awesome goals! Painting our honey oak bathroom vanities is on my January to-do list (I don’t think I’ve ever in my life kept a New Year’s goal, so I’m trying out just monthly goals instead). I can’t handle the ugliness anymore. What color are you planning for yours? And I’m so excited to see your kitchen all made over. It’s going to be gorgeous. Good luck with everything!

  7. Oh, also, on the topic of painted your rooms with the high ceilings: we had that issue too with our dining area and family room–the ceilings go all the way up to the roofline. Geez louise. We ended up just using a leaning ladder instead of scaffolding (although Jeff was in charge of all this, so I don’t know if he looked into scaffolding and decided against it for some reason, or just figured a ladder would be easier, I don’t know) and it worked just fine. I thought it was a little scary to use the leaning ladder, but there wasn’t any wall damage or anything from it. There you go. For what it’s worth, Brown Painting Not-So-Expertise.

  8. I totally have DIY project ADD…I always want things to just get done faster then they do so I start on something new and the process just continues :/…sooo count me in on the support group lol. By the way, I seriously love your shower curtain!!

  9. Our living room has vaulted ceilings that are anywhere from 11′-18′ tall, and we were able to get it all painted ourselves with a 16′ extension ladder, roller extension pole, and one of those edger tools on an extension pole. Looks super crisp, and we didn’t have to rent any scaffolding! Check it out here: http://magentaandlime.blogspot.com/2012/09/our-almost-painted-living-room.html

Good luck on the to-do’s! Happy Tuesday!

  10. I can’t wait to see what you do! And I’m totally excited for your kitchen. I need to paint our bathroom vanities too!

  11. You’ve only been working on your dining set for 4 months? You’ve BARELY started by my standards! This is an ambitious list, my friend. But I know you’ll kill it.

  12. You have a lot of goals that I can’t wait to see! I think I’m most excited about your kitchen makeover and seeing what you do to that gorgeous dining set!

PS: Let me know what you find out about painting your great room since you and I have the same tall ceiling problem 😉

  13. Come paint my living room when you’re done with yours. The whole two story is killer.

I love your craft room. Seriously, heart it. It’s like our craft rooms are twins.

  14. Great home goals. I need to put my list together soon too. I would love for you to come and link this up to my Winter Blues Wednesday party that opens tonight at 8pm EST. Hope to see you there.

  15. Boy, you sound like me. We have a cottage built in 1937 and we are restoring it. There is always something to do. I think painting your grandparents’ dining table and chairs is a great idea. I love your blog, fellow Hoosier.

  16. I have the same “honey oak” problem going on in my house…*sigh*. Can’t wait to see what you do! 🙂

  17. I have lots of two story rooms. I found I could rent scaffolding from Home Depot for roughly $100 for the week. I had to remove wallpaper that went up to the second story from those walls (why did they do that!?!). I had plenty of time to remove the wallpaper and paint — plus we changed out the outdated ceiling fan at the same time. I think the price was truly worth it — I now love my family room. Great to see other people have projects as ambitious as mine. So many projects, so little time!

  18. Oh my, so glad to know that DIY project ADD is a real thing, and that I’m not alone in my suffering! We need a special support group I think! Now, one thing I do have is an organized pantry, so if you ever need help with that or some labels, let me know!

  19. Okay. I’m slapping that donut out of your hand. I think you can just finish this whole list in January and then relax with plenty of pastries for the rest of the year.
    Right? Right?

Seriously, though. This is a great list and I’m looking forward to following along. Especially the kitchen cabinets painting. Not for the faint of heart.

  20. I’m inclined to think that DIY ADHD is a necessary part of the creative temperament.

  21. YAY! I’m so glad there is someone else with DIY project ADD like me! I was just thinking the other day that I seem to always have a dozen projects going at one time or another and I really need to completely finish one. Just one. All the way. Good look on your goals! I’m a new follower so I’m here for ya if you need some moral support. 🙂 Really… the honey oak. I’m there with ya. Got the same vanity in our guest bath and it just … ugh. And I painted my kitchen cabinets last year. So glad I did it!

  22. Thank you for bringing more awareness to DIY project ADD. There are so many who don’t understand this disease, and how it affects day-to-day living for those who suffer from it.
Our goal lists look eerily similar. Maybe we can keep each other motivated/on-task to finish these things by the end of the year?

  23. I have the exact same table and chairs in my dining room. I had to re-do the woven backs and the seats. I polished up the wood and it looks beautiful in my dining room now. You’ll be amazed how nice the chairs will look once you recover them!

  24. Yes to dIY ADD. I have all these ideas. Tons of ideas and dreams. But no money to do them. And I keep starting one and then I think of something else I want to do or I find a color scheme I know will be perfect. It’s never ending.
