Grrr, Facebook.

I don’t know if you’ve heard the news or not, but Facebook has started to charge page administrators a fee in order to promote our updates so the updates can reach the fans.  We’re talking $10 per status update here folks.  (As if Facebook didn’t make enough money as is…)  If page administrators don’t pay the promotion fee, a mere 10% of the fans will see the updates in their main Facebook feed.

If you’re a Two Twenty One Facebook fan, and you’d like to keep receiving posts, head over to the Two Twenty One page.  Click on the little wheel next to the “Liked” box.  Select “Add To My Interest Lists”.

Now, you’ll need to create an interest list, if you haven’t already.  If you haven’t, keep reading.

Perhaps you “like” more than one blog, and you’d like to receive updates from those blogs as well as two twenty one.  If so, your could name your list “Blogs”.

When you add another blog to your interest list, you can automatically select “Blogs” after selecting “Add to Interest Groups”.  Then that blog’s feed will show up in your “Blogs” interest list as well.

I hope this wasn’t too difficult to follow.  I wanted to share this information because I don’t you guys missing updates from two twenty one or your other favorite blogs.  Bloggers, feel free to share this post with your followers.

Did these directions work for you?
What are your thoughts on page administrators having to pay $10 per update in order to reach all their fans?

  1. I was wondering what that promote button did when it popped up out of the blue. That’s crazy and so not cool, Zuckerberg!!!

  2. That is crazy talk Facebook! So many people probably join FB to keep up with people/blogs, so they shouldn’t make it harder. I just started seeing that I can “promote” my status update for $7…nothing I say is that important!

  3. thanks for this! i am going to change my stuff right now. : )

    have a great day!

  8. Urgh, this totally blows. Sharing this now.

  9. I think it’s insane that bloggers, groups, and companies who work hard to build their own fan base (and bring those fans to facebook) are basically being punished or taken advantage of all while still supporting FB. In the meantime Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media is still free. Most of my hits don’t come from fb so it’s got me thinking… what’s the point?

  10. Chelsea,
Thanks so much for all the info, but I need some help:) When I go to my wheel, I don’t see…Add to Interest Lists and Add to my page favorites:( Do I need to make a….Create New List first? If so, where do I go to do this?

    Blessings,

    • You don’t do this for your own blog page, you do it for blog pages that you “like”. Does that make sense? So don’t go to your Coastal Charm FB page, go to my Two Twenty One page or anything blog you want to follow. Does that make sense?

  11. Thanks for the info!

  12. My wife reads your blog and she sent this link to me. I work in social media, and your blog post is totally correct, but you’re leaving out one small detail. It turns out before Facebook offered the ability to promote individual posts, your post reach was still averaging 10% of its total fans. I know this is different from page to page and you might have had more success than others in the past, but the ability to promote pages doesn’t affect your total organic reach that much in the end.

It’s a little old, but I’ve written about how Facebook’s edgerank algorithm calculates how much reach posts receive in the news feed. Check it out if you’d like: http://www.portent.com/blog/social-media/facebook-news-feed-optimization.htm

  13. I’ve already added lists to my FB so I can keep up with all the posts. And…it’s really not cool that FB is deciding if I’m allowed to see posts from pages that I’ve chosen to follow based on how much the’ve been paid by the authors of those posts.

  14. Sharing with this with my readers right now! I have been doing this for a while myself but so glad you were able to explain it so well. – Jacque

  15. I have been updating all the blogs I read. My question is where do I go to see all the interest groups I have? Probably right in front of me but I cannot find it.

  22. Where do I find the “Create New List” ??

    • If you haven’t created any lists yet the screens above should pop up when you click “next”. If you have created a list, the box should show the list(s) you already created and “+ New List” for you to make a new list.

  23. Whoa – thanks! I didn’t even know they had done this.

  26. This is so frustrating! I run a small business on Etsy and also have a FB page. I feel like I’m talking to myself on my FB, lol. Low views, no interaction at all. I’ve posted these instructions on my FB page, althougn I don’t know why because chances are greater that people won’t see them. Great idea to post this on your blog.
