Knock-Knock.

Remember last week when I told you guys how I want to paint our 1995 maroon front door so bad it hurts?  Well, I’ve been playing around with some color combos in Photoshop, and I want your opinions.

We live in one of those awesome cookie cutter neighborhoods, and I’m tired of our house looking like every other house in our hood.  So I want to paint our front door and shutters.

Lets start with the “before” shall we?  Ooh, look at all that maroon goodness.

I really want the door to be the focal point of the house.  Also, I hate the matchy-matchiness of painting the shutters and the door the same color.

Option One is to paint the door blue and the shutters and window thing beside the door black.

Option Two is to paint the door teal and the shutters and window thing beside the door black.

Brad accused me of being goth when I showed him the pictures with the black shutters.  So in case you’re thinking the same thing here’s two non-black shutter options.

I think Options 3 and 4 are bor-ing.  I don’t like how the shutters blend in with the house.

Option 5 is more of a rainbow smorgasbord look.

And just to let you know, I’m only painting the shutters, door, and the window thing beside the door.  So if you suggest painting the garage door or more, I expect you to help me paint.

Also, almost all of our neighbors have navy shutters so that’s out of the question.

What do you think?

Do you have a different suggestion?

Happy Easter!

  1. I think black door and shutters would be good… although I see that’s not one of your options. And I also don’t hate the maroon, though I would go for more of a RED door and black shutters. That’s just how I roll.

  2. I’m loving the off white (hopefully a match for one of the brick tones) with a black door. I think black shutters/window thing are a little heavy when combined with the black lamppost and lantern, but I like just a touch of black on the front door to tie those into the design. It seems the most balanced to me. I know you said not to suggest painting anything else unless I offer to help, but I can’t resist: maybe you could consider painting the two arched thingies (whatever they’re called) the same off white as the shutters. Then you’ll be rocking a balance (I really like that word, can you tell?) of cream, off white, and black.

BTW, your grass looks absolutely beautiful. Color me jealous (or brown).

  3. I like the black shutters! I also love a bright red door, but that is just me. It will look fab whatever you do, you have great style!

  4. So, the practical me thinks “off-white shutters will have to be cleaned all the time! Black hides dirt well.” Although black can look dreary it can also ground a lighter pallet. With that said, my vote is for black shutters and blue door.

  5. I’m totally loving the teal door with black. That would be outstanding!

  6. #5, #5, #5.

I think you should totally paint all of the brick. By hand. With a paint brush.

Okay, I picked #1. I really like black shutters. If the husband hates them…who cares. I mean….the white shutters with the blue door would be pretty too!! And by pretty, I mean unisex.

  7. I voted 1. I love a blue door- so inviting! :)

  8. Haha! Option 5 made me laugh! If you really want a pop of color, I’d go with the teal door & black shutters. :) Let us know what you decide to do!

    Have a great weekend!

  9. I love teal, but black shutters seem pretty boring to me, but i also love the off white shutters, but probably not with a teal door. so my vote is the teal door with black shutters i guess!

  10. I voted and I love the teal door with black shutter (just saw that Mendi did too!) :-)

  11. If you are trying to make the door a focal point, I think the white shutters draw less attention to the front windows, and allow the color of the door to stand out more. I vote for white/off white shutters and either blue or teal on the door, with some great accessories in the entry and color in the bed on the right to draw the eye to the door.

  12. Have you considered red? I don’t mean grayed-down red, I mean bright crimson? I kind of like matchy-matchy shutters & windows, but a black door might be o.k. I have dark navy shutters & door & we have a similar brick front to your home. I used to have a yucky rusty red color on my shutters.

  13. I love the teal w/ black. It’s unique but not overly dramatic. Just right in my opinion.

  14. Hmmm . . . that’s tough! The rainbow smorgasbord is certainly lovely (and I’m’ sure your neighbors would just LOVE that choice), but I think my favorite might be the blue door/black shutters. Although now that I’ve voted for that option on your poll, I’m looking again and maybe I prefer the teal door with black shutters . . . you know, I can’t decide. But either way, I definitely prefer the black shutters to the cream color–I agree, it blends in with the brick and I feel like the whole point of shutters is to add some drama/visual appeal, rather than matching the house, you know?

  15. I voted for number 5….just saying! Haha I like the black shutters and teal door! Your brick color would go well with Teal I think! Happy Painting!

  16. This is a timely post because we are wanting to paint our door and shutters! I am thinking a really dark brown….but I hadn’t considered painting the door a different color…hmmm. I like black shutters way better than off-white. I voted for the blue door….I’m afraid the teal might get old after a while. Plus there’s a house in our cookie-cutter neighborhood that went all teal – garage door, door, and shutters and WHOA, it’s one hot mess…so that probably biases me against teal! ;)

  17. I LOVE the black shutters. What about a royal blue door? There is a house I pass on my way to/from work that has almost a lime green door, and it looks adorable. And this is coming from someone who is NOT a lime green fan except when it comes to the actual fruit. Our new neighborhood is cookie cutter too, and you wouldn’t believe how many houses have maroon doors and shutters. I’m SO glad ours doesn’t. I’m not sure if we’re actually allowed to paint our front door due to the HOA rules… but if we can, I will. I’m definitely painting the garage to house door a dark turquoise or royal blue.

  18. Teal door! Option 2! White is boring!

  19. All right, I’ve given it further serious consideration, and I think I like the first option with the light blue door best. I have no reasoning or argument to support this decision. But there you have it.

  20. I definitely love the teal door with black shutters. How are black shutters with teal goth!?! ;)

  21. I thought about painting our door black but I was concerned about it appearing like a big hole in the house. However I like the black shutters. I also like the off white. I would I agree with a previous poster and I’d consider red for the front door. Red doors are classic and never go out of style.

  22. Ha! I never thought about black shutters as being “goth”, lol. I like teal/black best!

  23. Go with Option 5! Classic! That’s the only way to break free from the cookie-cutters!!!!
    I’m just kidding. I like #3

  24. I voted for teal door and black shutters. Actually, I think I would really love teal door with white shutters, but I also really like the black. And I LOVE the idea of a teal door.

Color me jealous, by the way. We’re not allowed to change the colors on our house, outside of the approved colors by our HOA, which wouldn’t end in anything fun like a teal door!

  25. Definitely go with the teal door!!! So fun!

  26. I like the black shutters and light blue door. Does your HOA have any restrictions on what color things can or cannot be painted?

  27. Christine Daoust says:

How did you end up painting it? Definitely would love to see an “after” photo ;)

  28. Do what you want! We just got new windows and I want to paint the exterior frames either black or all different bright colours.
